It’s a long-held assumption that yoga mat bra size can vary based on bra size, but new research suggests otherwise.
According to a study by the University of California, San Diego, and a few other researchers, women who wear a size 34-38 bra are more likely to have a larger bust than those who wear the same size bra as a yoga studio owner, a business owner, or a yoga teacher.
“Women with smaller busts and smaller breasts are likely to experience increased stress in yoga, and this could be related to yoga mat size,” said the study, which was published in the International Journal of Sport and Health.
“This could be an explanation for the lack of support for yoga mats and the increased stress they can cause.”
The study examined data from more than 2,000 yoga mats, which are typically purchased for classes of up to 20 people and typically offer up to 30 yoga mats for sale.
The researchers used data from online yoga stores and asked participants to describe the size of their mat and how it fit.
The study was limited to women who had never been in a yoga class before and who were not yoga instructors.
The results revealed that yoga mats that were smaller than 34-39 inches, were found to be significantly more popular among yoga instructors, and yoga mats of size 38-42 inches were significantly more expensive, compared with those with a size 30-34.
The size difference between the two mats was not statistically significant.
However, the study did find that yoga instructors were more likely than yoga mats made for business owners to have their mats customized, meaning that yoga studio owners who wanted to make their mat smaller may be able to do so.
“The study suggests that yoga studios are willing to pay more for larger mat sizes, even though yoga studios that have a large selection of yoga mats are more expensive,” said lead author Jessica Krasny, an associate professor of health policy and management at UC San Diego.
“We think this is a result of a larger yoga mat market, and the more expensive the yoga mats get, the more likely they are to be sold at higher prices.”
